What is cryptocurrency?

A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend. Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized networks based on blockchain technology. A defining feature of cryptocurrencies is that they are generally not issued by any central authority, rendering them theoretically immune to government interference or manipulation.

Why is cryptocurrency important?

Despite being a medium of exchange, a cryptocurrency is not issued by any central bank or monetary authority. The digital currency's decentralized nature is also the main reason why governments are also afraid of it. Cryptocurrency has the potential to undermine the authority of central banks and monetary authorities. At times, these currencies can be used to circumvent capital controls. Cryptocurrency exchanges are regulated. However, due to their recent origin and lack of definition, many authorities claim control over their regulation.

Why have cryptocurrencies become so popular?

There is a reason why cryptocurrencies have become so popular. They make it very convenient to transfer funds between two parties. There is no need for a third party or a middleman. Also, the processing charges are low compared to the traditional charges levied by banks or other financial institutions.

Should you invest?

The cryptocurrency market is volatile and still a relatively new market. There are many critics that claim the market to be a bubble and big time investor, Warren Buffet, is 'anti-crypto' critic. He claims that cryptocurrencies offer no economic benefits and highlights that cryptocurrencies is widely used for illegal activities. While there are a lot of wide range of negativity associated with cryptocurrencies, cryptocurrencies has its benefits as well.

While the initial growth of cryptocurrencies, or Bitcoin to be specific, was used for illegal transactions, nowadays, we are starting to see the commerical use of cryptocurrencies emerging. As mentioned previously, cryptocurrencies are decentralized and take the middleman out of the equation.

Benefits of Decentralization

The benefit of decentralization is that the power of the economy is not associated with a single person or a small group of individuals. It gives everyone the power to govern and contribute to the economy. Also, because all transactions of cryptocurrencies can be accessible to the public, there is full transparency of how each transaction is being handled. The power to control the economy is too vast of a responsibility to be handled by a group of selected individuals. With cryptocurrency, that power is equally distributed amongst the people.

Taking the Middleman Out of the Picture

Currently, there are many systems that are archaic and inefficient. For example, currency exchanges take a long time and are expensive because of the different payment schemes. By consolidating and simplifying the validation of different payment schemes into one central form, allows the process to significantly more effective and less expensive.

The economy is a tool utilized by the world. To have a group of selected individuals dictate and manage the flow of the economy is more responsbility than those people should be allowed. It leads too easily into corruption and there is a need for more transparency in the actions of those individuals. With cryptocurrencies, the power belongs to the people and every transaction is publicly available. That is the definition of decentralization and moving on to the future, this is what we need.

Factors affect BTC prices

The supply of bitcoin and market demand for it

The cost of producing a bitcoin through the mining process

The rewards issued to bitcoin miners for verifying transactions to the blockchain

The number of competing cryptocurrencies

The exchanges it trades on

Regulations governing its sale

Its internal governance

Conclusion

In the end, there are many pros and cons to each side of the fence and it is up to each individual to conduct their own research to conclude on whether cryptocurrency is something they believe in.
